09/03/10 New works by Emi Avora added to ArtLab

ArtLab is pleased to be offering a range of new works by Emi Avora, all of which can be viewed on the artist’s page.  The collection consists of ten enigmatic oil paintings that extend Avora’s practice of depicting brooding interiors and architectural features.   Largely devoid of human presence, these works remain to speak of the aftermath of an event, as if the viewer has arrived late or is witnessing the remains of some previous occasion.  It is this conflation of presence and absence that imbues the works with a powerful and dramatic effect, one that is heightened further by Avora’s rich and laborious application of paint on to the canvas.  Predominantly monochromatic, the artist employs a wide range of imagery to inspire the settings depicted in her work, often interpreting this visual stimuli through a hybrid of styles and influences, including the Baroque and Art Deco.

The new works available through ArtLab follow two successful solo exhibitions of work by Emi Avora at The Apartment in Athens, Greece and Trübenbach Galerie in Cologne, Germany.  Later this year, Avora will be exhibiting in Bradford, UK at the South Square Gallery.
