Meet the artist

Toby Latham

Latham’s monoprints represent his own vision of people in terms of their relationship with ‘place.’ The work also portrays the artist’s own changing consciousness due to changes in his circumstances and environment. He has lived in different parts of the UK, both urban and rural, and his works are an attempt to process and understand the different stimuli these different environments evoke.

The use of both photographs and drawings as source material means the pieces take on a dreamlike quality that reflects neither reality nor an imaginary world. He says, ‘one of the main practical concerns is to produce a rich surface (Some of the pieces are an accumulation of 30 layers of ink). This enables him to deliver the ‘transcendent’ or ‘otherworldly’ qualities apparent in the work.
