Meet the artist

Benet Spencer

The thickly layered paintings on display on Art Lab are from a series of works that spring from a recent trip the artist has taken to South East Asia. The process of globalisation and the fast paced economic development that this area of the world has seen has produced fusion of Eastern and Western elements; this has brought about eclectic landscapes that seem to describe fictitious utopias and dystopias. The range of parts present in the works includes multiple collaged animals, pattern, vegetation, mountains and architecture - represented through various painting styles, materials and forms. These hybrid realities mirror the phenomena of the natural or man-made world, such as the migration of animals or generic cityscapes.

Whilst representing the energy and vitality of exotic landscapes - as found throughout the Far East - the forced co-existence of strangely conflicting parts creates a disjointed world. Highly stylised elements sit alongside photographic collage, surface pattern along with painterly daubs - combining to suggest an uneasy relationship between natural and man-made forms. These self-contained worlds convey a humorous naivety that masks a reality of utopias on the brink of destruction.
