Alex Currie

The series 'Infrastructure of Artifice' was shot on location in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 2007, using a large format view camera.

Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, and only second to Shanghai globally, the vastness of which is a literal reflection of global trade and by extension the 'globalised' world.

This artificial landscape, reclaimed from the sea, is in these images presented as one from which humans are absent, despite evidence everywhere of human intervention.

These images invite the viewer to contemplate a landscape not without beauty and a certain tranquility, but one also possessed of the eerie and even brutal.
